First day of 30 seconds film project

Updated: May 13, 2020

As the plan, we all met up for a quick view of the pub where Chev works at. As soon as we walked in, we could feel the vibe immediately. The pub was really nice and does have good lightings, different elements that we need for a good film.

We – photography team – planned the shoot, scene and equipment, sound team planned out the sound effects that they will need and also equipment whichever they need to bring with. Of course, before we work on the project, both photography and sound team had been well prepared for the action. We had some lessons on how to use the equipment for sound record along with sound students, so it was really helpful, we know what we need and where to start. Along with it, we also carried out experimentation to understand type of sounds.

We got on track after workshop sessions. On the photoshoot day, the only problem that the group had was sound team borrowed a set of equipment from University which did not work. Even though, that did not stop the process as we still carried on the shoot and we would note down what sounds we need in order to put them in the film so sound team can record after.

Helena and I we put ourselves in director position, Chuck was cameraman. The equipment was brought with are a tripod, a stabiliser, a barndoors light and a Canon 5D camera. Lens we were using are a standard lens 50mm (medium close-up shot) and 8-15mm (wide shot), a macro lens 60mm (close-up shots with depth of field). The film was applying a few compositions such as depth of field for all the close-up shots, rule of thirds for the half body shots when actors using the dialogue, viewpoint for the distractions from the perspective of the actor and the camera was set in Auto White Balance. We had to follow the brief and prepare carefully which scene should be shot first and follow up as we were using the lens for specific shot. Me and Helena we noted down which scene need to be done first then the scene following that. We also set up the model poses. Before headed to the shooting, we took a few sample pictures of the scene under the same light which we were going to film to see if the setting was right or not then we will go with it. We also did try out some test shoots in order to test the lighting, position and we also filmed a scene a several times so we could pick out the best out of all. For the audio, sound team brought with them microphone, shotgun mic and a lavaliere mic. Unfortunately, their equipments got problem so we couldn't record the sound on the same day, we had to record another day.

So photography team we worked on our part, we did the scene and film, everything was done follows the storyboard. Our next step is to upload the video and edit it through Premiere Pro.
